Service Learning Homelessness in Franklin County
The 12 students in seventh period Bible class were studying the book of Acts and discovered that Acts the poor were very important to God and to the early church. We decided to study homelessness in Franklin county. The students did research on homelessness and decided the best thing to do would be to make lunches and pass them out. The students contributed over $300 and made over 200 lunches. On April 24 those lunches, along with some clothing and flashlights were handed out. We were helped by Billy Ray and Travis, two men who formerly lived on the streets and have come to know Christ and who are now involved in ministry to the homeless. We could not find many homeless due to the time of day. We did take 150 lunches to Faith Mission. Apparently we were an answer to prayer, as there was not food for lunch the following day. Those lunches were used to feed all the residents of Faith Mission on Saturday April 25. We did visit one camp and we left food and supplies there. The remaining food was distributed around the Columbus YMCA. We hope to go out again either on a Wednesday or Saturday evening to try to connect more with the homeless community. Here are some pictures.
